Voyager's Maquis Crew

After Chakotay had rammed the Kazon carrier and thereby destroyed his ship in VOY: "Caretaker", his Maquis crew joined USS Voyager. They were given provisional rank insignia, as opposed to those of Janeway's regular Starfleet crew. Although they had been integrated by the beginning of season 3 (sooner and more seamlessly than we would have expected), being a Maquis played a role in a few later episodes, such as notably "Repression" when a Bajoran named Teero Anaydis uses Tuvok's telepathic powers to bring Chakotay's former crew under his control. The number of Maquis on Voyager can be implied from this episode. It is relevant with regard to the overall crew count of the ship and the (small) size of Chakotay's raider.

Our article lists the former Maquis members on Voyager that are known by name and those that were only seen or implied to be former Maquis. We further attempt to match these figures to what has been stated about the composition of the crew, especially in "Repression". Chell says: "Almost a quarter of the crew [of about 145 at the time] is Maquis". Chakotay later states about the status of the mutiny: "There are still 23 [besides the about 8 who are already under control] of our former comrades who aren't with us yet." Both statements narrow down the number of former Maquis on Voyager to the range of 30 to 35. Everything higher or lower would be a problem to explain.

Named Maquis Crew

The following list includes all Maquis members that were part of Voyager's crew at the end of "Caretaker" and are known by name, ordered alphabetically by last names. We take into account all those that were explicitly mentioned as former Maquis in some fashion and those that are recognizable because of their provisional insignia. We count the total number, as well as the number of those that are supposedly still alive at the time of "Repression".

Color Rank and name Sex and race Image Annotations Episodes Alive
Lt. JG Ayala Male human Ayala is granted the provisional rank of lieutenant JG and assigned to Security. He is frequently seen performing his shipboard duties as well as away missions and relieving either Tuvok or Harry Kim at Tactical or Ops. Ayala apparently transfers to Command and is working at the Mission Ops I station on the bridge when Voyager returns to Earth in 2378 in "Endgame". 123 x
Kurt Bendera Male human Bendera works in engineering and is killed during a Kazon-Nistrim attack in "Alliances". 8
Carlson Male human He only appears in Tuvok's holodeck insurrection program later hijacked by Seska in "Worst Case Scenario", but is likely modeled after an actual crew member. "Worst Case Scenario" x
Commander Chakotay Male human Former commander of the Maquis raider and first officer on USS Voyager. All x
Crewman Chell Male Bolian Chell serves in engineering throughout Voyager's journey home. First garnering attention as one of the Maquis struggling to adapt to Starfleet life in "Learning Curve". He also undergoes quite a make-up revision. "Learning Curve", "Repression" x
Crewman Kenneth Dalby Male human A member of Tuvok's "boot camp" for Maquis in "Learning Curve". "Learning Curve" x
Doyle Male human In the mess hall scene, he expresses the wish to report to Chakotay, rather than to Tuvok. "Repression" x
Ensign Fitzpatrick Male human He appears in corridors, the mess hall and bridge stations throughout Voyager's seven-year journey home. He is among the first five crew members to fall into a coma in "Repression". 43 x
Crewman Garron Male Bajoran A young Maquis singled out by Tuvok for his "boot camp" in "Learning Curve". "Learning Curve" x
Crewman Henley Female human Another inexperienced Maquis in Tuvok's "boot camp" in "Learning Curve". "Learning Curve" x
Ensign Hogan Male human Hogan works in engineering. He takes part in the investigations that uncover fellow Maquis members Lon Suder as a murderer in "Meld" and Michael Jonas as a traitor in "Investigations". He is killed on Hanon IV by a land eel in "Basics II" and later excavated by the Voth in "Distant Origin". "Alliances", "Meld", "Investigations", "Deadlock", "Tuvix", "Resolutions", "Basics II"
Jackson Probably human Only mentioned by Seska as her co-conspirator in stealing mushrooms to cook Chakotay's favorite soup. "State of Flux" x
Crewman Jarvin Male human Voices support for a hypothetical mutiny after Torres's altercation with Lieutenant Carey in engineering in "Parallax". "Parallax" x
Crewman Michael Jonas Male human Jonas secretly transmits information to the Kazon and dies in a plasma stream when Neelix catches him red-handed in "Investigations". "Alliances", "Threshold", "Dreadnought", "Lifesigns", "Investigations"
Crewman Jor Female human A close friend of Tabor's in "Repression", Tuvok suspects her of attacking him, until she herself is found in a coma. "Repression" x
Ensign Seska Female Cardassian Seska is first seen with the blue uniform color of the Sciences division and apparently switches to Operations. She turns out to be a Cardassian spy in Bajoran disguise and defects to the Kazon in "State of Flux". She appears for real in 11 episodes and additionally as a hologram in "Worst Case Scenario" (in Tuvok's "anti-Maquis" program that she modified to take revenge on the crew) and in an alternate timeline in "Shattered". 11 (+2)
Ann Smithee Female human Her name and picture appear only on Teero's display in "Repression". This is apparently meant more like an in-joke (like Alan Smithee, the elusive movie director). "Repression" x
Ensign Lon Suder Male Betazoid After murdering fellow crew member Frank Darwin in "Meld", he is confined to his quarters. He dies in "Basics II", fighting the Kazon, who have captured the ship. "Meld", "Basics I+II"
Ensign Tabor Male Bajoran Tabor recognizes Cardassian war criminal Crell Moset in "Nothing Human" and is the first victim of Teero Anaydis and Tuvok's mind attack in "Repression". "Nothing Human", "Repression" x
Lt. B'Elanna Torres Female Klingon / human Chief engineer of USS Voyager since "Parallax". Almost all x
Yosa Male human Only appears in "Repression" as the second victim of Teero and Tuvok's mental control. "Repression" x
Total: 21       Alive in "Repression": 16

There are overall 21 Maquis on Voyager, whose name was mentioned at some point. 16 of them may still be alive at the time of "Repression" when their number matters most because we have a definite range of 30 to 35. Should the number of unnamed Maquis rise too high, it is admissible to count the unseen Jackson only once. If necessary, we may also consider to disregard Smithee as an in-universe in-joke or to assume that some named Maquis were among the unnamed casualties on the ship, such as in "The Killing Game" or "Equinox".

The crew manifests and duty rosters that were seen at various points in the series possibly list lots of further Maquis. Yet, none of these distinguishes between Maquis and original Starfleet in any way. Maybe we should assert that "almost a quarter" of these names belong to members of Chakotay's crew for statistical reasons. Then again, these lists customarily include very few "real" characters and are supplemented with the names of the production staff, such as Rick Berman, Arlene Fukai, Dennis McCarthy, Michael Piller or David Stipes. It is obvious that once we decided to include all these names, Voyager would have a crew of more than 300, rather than 140. This is why we disregard them, as already in the assessment of the overall crew count.

Unnamed Maquis Crew

The following are crew members that can be identified as being Maquis because of their provisional rank insignia at least at one point of the series, or whose being Maquis can be implied from them being present in the mess hall meeting in VOY: "Repression". We sum up the total (maximum) number of unnamed Maquis, and the ones that can be identified as being distinct individuals.

Color Designation Sex and race Image Annotations Episodes Distinct
Command officer 1 Male human Can be seen in a couple of season 5 and 6 episodes. Played by Steve Stella. About 4 x
Command officer 2 Male human Can be seen only in the mess hall scene (behind Chell, the Bolian). "Repression" x
Command officer 3 Female Vulcan Can be seen in a corridor with Chakotay and in the mess hall. Her sudden existence raises a special problem regarding "Counterpoint". Played by Kate Jo Hughes. "Repression" x
3 more command officers 2 female, 1 male Seen from behind in "Repression" besides command officer 2, not really identifiable. "Repression"
Operations officer 1 Female human Appears only once, kissing a Starfleet crew member in the turbolift. Played by Lora Zuckerman. "Elogium" x
Operations officer 2 Male human Has been identified as appearing twice. Can be seen in "Worst Case Scenario" on the very left. Played by stuntman Steve Blalock. "Worst Case Scenario", "Equinox" x
Operations officer 3 Male human Can be seen in "Blink of an Eye" and in the mess hall scene (in the background, behind operations 5 and science 5). "Blink of an Eye", "Repression" x
Operations officer 4 Male human Can be seen in various episodes, not including "Repression" as it seems. Played by Stephen Pisani. Many x
Operations officer 5 Female human Is visible in "Repression", to the right of the Vulcan woman. "Repression" x
Operations officer 6 Female human Seen in "Repression" on the very left, behind Doyle. Could she be Ann Smithee? "Repression" x
1 more operations officer Female Seen from behind in "Repression" in the center, not identifiable. "Repression"
1 more operations officer Male Seen from behind in "Repression" on the very right, not identifiable. This can't be Josa, who is in sickbay at the time. "Repression"
Science officer 1 Female human Can be seen in various episodes, starting in season 5 (including in Maquis clothes in "Shattered"), but not in "Repression". Played by Sunny Hawks. About 8 x
Science officer 2 Female human Can be seen in various season 1 and 2 episodes. Played by Jordan Monheim. About 14 x
Science officer 3 Female human Can be seen in various season 1 and 2 episodes. Played by C. Bender. About 5 x
Science officer 4 Female human Is visible in "Repression", to the left of Chell. "Repression" x
Science officer 5 Male human Is visible in "Repression", between operations officer 4 and science officer 4. "Repression" x
3 more former Maquis 1 female, 2 male Seen besides the named characters in "Worst Case Scenario". "Worst Case Scenario"
Total: 22       Distinct: 14

So we can see some 22 Maquis (perhaps a few more) that are not known by name, mostly in the mess hall scene in "Repression". 14 of them are identifiably new faces, not among those we know. Some of the remaining 8 that we see only partially or from behind could and perhaps should be among the Maquis from previous episodes, considering that it is explicitly a gathering of the old crew. Yet, it would be only speculation to assign names or identities to them.

One crew member visible in the mess hall scene is missing from our list for a good reason. The second Bolian, who can be seen beside Chell, almost definitely is Golwat. She was played by different actresses, but the small and slim Bolian woman was always supposed to be the same person. And Golwat is not a Maquis; she was aboard Voyager already when the ship left for the Badlands in "Caretaker". We may assume that she joined fellow Bolian crew member Chell out of solidarity, or was coerced into attending the meeting (which takes place among those who have not yet been brainwashed) in some fashion. In any case, we won't count her as Maquis.

So the mess hall scene in "Repression" doesn't allow the identification of all Maquis that are in the room. It is not even clear whether all who are present are actually Maquis, as the case of Golwat proves. Vice versa, we may have seen crew members in the background in various other episodes, whose rank insignia were unrecognizable and who may well have been Maquis. On the other hand, there is no real reason to increase their number, unless it were otherwise too low, which is definitely not the case.

Further Considerations

As already mentioned in the introduction, there should be between 30 and 35 former Maquis on Voyager at the time of "Repression" according to the lines by Chakotay and Chell. Looking just at how many appear in this episode, we have 18 Maquis or more in the mess hall scene alone. Tabor, Josa, Jor, Fitzpatrick and at least one more are in a coma at the time, which gives us a lower limit of 23 Maquis, as not necessarily all of them are present. This fits with the verbal statements, but only within this one episode.

Once we take into account previous Maquis appearances, we arrive at 16 named crew that may still be alive + 22 unnamed crew, which is slightly too high. But we may decide to deduct a few people that are not clearly recognizable in "Repression", perhaps as many as the 8 that are seen from behind. Ultimately we may also assume that some Maquis died prior to season 7. It seems likely that there are still a few undiscovered Maquis in the series (especially crew members whose provisional insignia are too hard to recognize), but these may exist according to our figures.

It is good to know that Ayala and Fitzpatrick, the two background Maquis with the by far most appearances, show up in "Repression" too, as their absence would have been noticeable. Also, Derek McGrath as Chell and Jad Mager as Tabor both reprise their roles. Finally, it is commendable that apparently no Maquis appeared as Starfleet or vice versa, which may have thrown off the analysis, the only possible exception being Golwat.

In the context of the reconstructed overall crew count, the figures that work best are:
